Magic

I think the key thing is that it’s a discovery for magic. I’m looking for magic. And the magic’s got to be compositional, it’s got to be paint. If there’s magic in the subject matter, that’s fine; but I’ve got to surprise myself. And that process of leaving the painting open, not knowing where I’m going, seems the best avenue for me to ending up someplace where I go, “Whoa, did I do that? -Tom Prochaska
This is how painting is for me. I just wanted to share.
I have struggled all day to get photos of new paintings, so hard to photograph my work, it just does not translate well, so I have nothing for now, even the light cube does not help with these graphite pieces, very frustrated. I will try again tomorrow. I did get some nice detail views though so I will share one.
Happy Saturday! XOXO

Maybe natural light will work better Annie? I think sometimes things look better outside.

I like what Tom Prochaska said. I think painting like that must be a bit like "letting go" except with brushes.

Happy Sunday!! xoxoxoxo

Annie - fabulous quote and I see magic in that painting of yours!
Sorry it's so hard to photograph - maybe reading up on lighting and 'bouncing' light will help.
xxoo

nice quote. painting looks good to me. perhaps it is possible to just accept that they are two different mediums. a) the painting in its original form and us standing before it and seeing it directly or b) the painting as presented through the lens of a camera.

I used to look at lots of art books as a kid. one of my fav painters was Van Gogh. I remember seeing one of his painting "for real" in the museum and being "shocked." It was nothing like the photos in the books. The colors differed, the size had not been sensed by my via the photos and so on. The textures and qualities of paint. etc. a painting can not really be reproduced. even by experts who are making art books.

ps i didnt take Jan's workshop in the end. It was ten weeks long and with a few breaks went on into June so I let it go.

Thank you all and Suki, you are right, I am probably trying too hard, but I know that most of you will never see my work in person, so I want to get the best photo I can. And Jos, I took many of the photos outside and yes it is better than inside, but still not good, yet. I am going back out today and trying again :-). xoxo

Wishing you well with the photo taking!

rehearsals and plans always distract me from finding that direct experience, that moment your talking about. sometimes I set the aperture on cloudy on F8.0, then program MODE ISO 200, fluorescent, neutral light, center weighted avg, (L)2816x2112- then do focus shots using the icon flower. the rest you can edit.

Mitch, happy to see you, thanks for the tips, but I am just using a point and shoot! xoxo
