New Work
This is a brand new 12"x 12" mixed media collage. I used an image I have had for a long time of a flute player. This is a first for me, using an image I did not paint and I have to say it felt like cheating. I know many people make a career of doing this, but it is not something I did easily. I do love it however and I will get over it :-). The title is of course "The Flute Player". Love to hear your thoughts on this issue and this collage.
XOXO

I do understand what you are saying. I am the same way about using something that is not my own in my work. I won't even use stencils unless I cut them out myself fro my own designs.
But this lovely though....I say good for you and you have made it your own.
Roberta, I know, I won't use stencils either, it is so funny how we can be, but I do feel I have made it my own and it does not bother me at all that other artists do it, it is just that it takes some getting used to for me. xoxo
what roberta said... : )
*and* i love this, annie... that red! and the flute player!
xoxo
Love everything about this painting . . . and you have definitely made it your own.
xxoo
First of all, I LOVE this piece! I feel the same way you do about using images that aren't mine. I do it at times, but am careful not to violate someone's copyright, mainly by using images that are too old to still be under copyright laws. Your image, I'm sure, was never copyrighted at all, and is only a small part of the overall collage. But really, this is an issue that will always be there in the collage genre; it's the nature of the beast. Well done, I say - you have definitely made it your own, and created a beautiful piece.
Lynne, Thank you sweetie, xoxo
Judy, Sweet words, thank you. xoxo
Sharmon, Thank you, it is a very old image, I printed it out on rice paper. I do not know the copyright on it as it had nothing with it in the magazine I got it from. You are right , this will always be an issue
and all we can do is be as careful and respectful as we can. xoxo
It is a beautiful image which you have added a new dimension to. I have niggles with photoshop "paintings" which seem to be more about cut and paste rather than what you have created here which is a whole new journey for the flute player. Just follow your heart.
Melanie, Thank you, wise words :-),

This feeling of "cheating" is an interesting one. Sometimes when I use solvents and let the paint just do it's thing I feel like that's cheating (I didn't do it). I think sometimes it's just the mind churning. For me it can keep me honest but also be a hindrance. I think each time we see this potential mischief maker it's good to reflect on what it's really about. Am I solving a painting problem in a lazy way or am I letting something other than the "mind" lead the way? Thanks for offering me cause to reflect on this a little more.
There is such a feeling of mystery to this piece. It is delicious.
Zen, You have given me things to ponder as well :-). I think for me in this piece, it was the perfect thing and I was lead into it, but the question of am I being lazy was asked and answered :-)now that I think about it. Part of my process is to let chance lead the way and funny enough I never thought of that as cheating. Thank you for the interesting comment. xoxo
wow :) That looks very nice and fun too. Missing you a lot :)
M.Kate,
Thank you sweetie. I miss you too, FB has taken over blogging, it is not what it used to be.
I hope you are well and happy!

It is still you Annie, whether you have collaged an image onto your painting or not. You have certainly made it your own and I love it.
Robyn, Thank you, high praise coming from you. xoxo
