New Work

This is untitled, 8"x8", Venetian plaster, oil and graphite on cradle board, also side views and detail shots. Click to enlarge to see more detail. Sorry about the glare on the last photo. This piece is going to be in my etsy shop soon. I am working on a series of small pieces that I will be selling for under $50, I will share photos soon. I know my prices are not cheap and I want to make some pieces that are more affordable. This piece is larger so it will likely be $145. I have been painting and selling my work for 30 years, so I feel I have earned a higher price, and in the gallery this piece would be going for $700-800, with me receiving half that. On my site I can keep the prices lower as I don't have to share the profit :-). Pricing art is such a pain, if any artists out there want to share how they do it let me know. I do know that I have seen many giving their work away and I know it is not about the money, but I feel you have to value your own work. My highest price for a painting thus far is $5,000, small potatoes in the art world, but a fortune to me :-). I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. I know a lot of us struggle with this. Also let me know what you think of this piece, if you would be so kind.

Thank you all for your concern about Bella, she went on her first hike since the bite and she is almost back to her old self, another week of meds.
I am off for a weekend of painting, I have not painted this much since my 20's, it feels so good to make the time no matter how tired or rushed I am, it is always worth it :-).
Happy Saturday!XOXO

I love this piece! Love the vertical lines and the composition! It just begs to be looked at more deeply.

I don't have a clue about pricing. I think a lot depends on where you are, your competition in your galleries (including Etsy), your followers and whether you are 'collectible.'

Sadly it's not always about how wonderful the piece is.

Glad to hear Bella is doing well!

Annie, I was shocked to read about Bella! You must have been beside yourself worrying about her. So relieved she is almost back to normal. She will probably be very wary of snakes from now on. My Bella catches small snakes and brings them inside to me but a rattler would be more than she could handle.

As for your new painting .... I can feel the magic! The stripes, the palette and the wrap around design appealed to me immediately. LOVE it!

Hi Annie!
I recently read a post about pricing and you might find it interesting. It is here: http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2012/04/storyofmoney.html

Your piece has texture to swoon over! Love it. The drawn lines at the top are a bit perfect for my eye, but they do balance the imperfection of the texture. A nice yin/yang balance.

Love your work! *smiles* Norma

John Simlett on his blog today also talks about how to price his art: http://gatepostpicture.blogspot.com/2012/05/my-view-on-marketing.html

I don't sell a lot of art. But have priced my art quilts from $200-$500. I know others who get
$1000's ++ for theirs.

Sometimes if in a show I have to give a percentage to the gallery.

One quilt I worked on steadily over three months. I did not get what I deserved I fear.

I haven't tried to sell a painting or a drawing yet. Might though.

That top piece here is wonderful and well worth the sellers price...or I guess what the traffic will bear.

I think it is very cool that you are doing a series of affordable, smaller pieces. ( I may just have to buy one!) I love art, but unfortunately it is usually way out of my price range... so I am generally pretty happy when I can pick up a pot/mug/cup from a fellow clay artist. They had a a clay show in Santa Fe today & I did just that!
Your weekend sounds wonderful Annie, enjoy!
:) miss you, too!

I loved this piece immediately!
I will tell you how it makes me feel, as for me that is so much of what art is about.
Feels as though I'm at a beachy cottage, sheer white curtains moving slightly in the ocean breeze.I am cozy and at peace stretched out on this wonderful coverlet,,,,just being,,, drifting with my thoughts.
As for pricing art work???
Who knows, not me.

I only know that if I'd ever received 5 thou for a painting, I would have to be revived with smelling salts! Good for you!

i see a piano! i see music! i love art but i don't know how to appreciate it (or put it in words). and pricing any type of art/craft is my least favorite thing in the world. i know it's a necessary thing sometimes, but still, cannot do that very well.

Judy, Thank you, you always leave such thoughtful comments.xoxo
Robyn, Thank you! Bella is almost 100% her old self. We are so lucky.
Glad you like the painting! xoxo
Norma, Thank you for the link.If any lines in this painting are perfect it is totally by accident LOL.xoxo
Lynn,In all my shows I have been in they always take almost half and all the galleries take half. You have to figure that into the selling price for sure. I have always underpriced my work for years until I realized that it may take longer to sale at a higher price, but it felt so much better.
Having said that I like the idea of making smaller, less time consuming works that everyone can afford that feels good too.xoxo
Becky, Thank you and you know that I would love for you to have a painting!let's talk soon.xoxo
Babs, I love how my painting makes you feel :-). I just sold that painting last year and it was a big leap forward. The painting was a large 47"x 47" and it took me 3 months to do. It lives in Santa Fe now. But you also have to realize I know artists in Taos who get 25,000 for the same size painting.
So I am still small potatoes.xoxo
Lori,I think you put it into words just fine. I love you dear girl.xoxo

good for you for making the time. this one feels very piano like. pricing? I have no clue. I am not an artist and just a maker of things which I would be happy to get money for but I also dont like to hang on to them so am happy to give away.

5000 does seem a very very good price.

Suki, I consider you an artist :-).
I also hate having my art hang around and I give much of it away to friends too.xoxo

Annie, your new style has taken you (and us) into wonderful new dimensions! This is wonderful!

I have a hard time with pricing too. I sell in a few different venues and I have to adjust the prices to their audience. I was just interviewed at a new gallery in Connecticut where I will be able to put my larger, pricier pieces. It's so hard, especially in this economy.

Good luck with all your sales. You're bound to get a whole new audience with these!

P.S. Yikes, a snake bite!! That can be dead serious. I'm so glad she's doing okay.♥

Great to hear that Bella is doing so much better.

I feel awkward about putting a money value on the things I make. I'm not the quickest with hand sewing, so I know a £ per hour value would end up being far too much.

Your new painting is yet in another direction. You are on fire right now. :-) I'm loving seeing it all.

Hi Annie! Sorry to be late to the party - life has been busy. I love the way your work seems to be some kind of magical written language. I keep staring at it, thinking I should be 'reading' it. Translating those lines. It reminds me of a musical score, too. It's been so enjoyable to see your work change and develop. As for pricing things, I haven't a clue! :) xox

This piece is gorgeous, Annie! I LOVE how you're adding the graphite and creating such touchable texture. You are really on a roll!

I'm so glad Bella is doing better. Huge hugs to you both.

I'm with you Annie. Pricing art is a pain. One thing I HAVE learned is never to undervalue your work. Ask for the price you want, but leave a little wiggle room for those who need a bit of persuading.

I am glad your dog is okay. Have you given Bella the rattlesnake vaccine? Our dog Pono has gotten it, and gets a booster every year. I also took him to a rattlesnake avoidance class. That's important in the desert, I think.

Wow the piece is so unique and pretty in it's own way.
